Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My school has students from Pre-K through sixth grade. Approximately 70% of our students qualify for free and reduced-priced lunch. We also have a high English Language Learner population. Many of our students come from immigrant families and speak a second language at home.
My goal is to help students understand the importance of accurate measurements when collecting data for a science investigation.
My students are a curious group of incoming fifth graders who are excited about science. They are looking forward to science investigations and their curiosity is quite infectious. One of my goals this year is to integrating science and math to create a successful STEM classroom.
My Project
I would like to provide my elementary students an opportunity to get excited about STEM! Measurement is an integral part of any science and math class, and students generally struggle with this skill. I would like to provide my students with the option to use a variety of measuring tools to understand the concept of volume. I plan on providing my students various opportunities to measure the volume of a variety of objects they see and use around them on a daily basis. In fifth grade we study volume in math. Students will use the interlocking centimeter cubes to study the metric system and make the correlation between the formula for volume and 1 cubic centimeter. My students need as much exposure to hands-on activities to differentiate between the metric system and the U.S Customary system of measurement.
For my students to succeed, I need to provide them with as many real life experiences as possible, using volume.
My students will also compare the volume of liquids using the various liquid measuring sets, representing real life objects they are familiar with. A successful STEM classroom is one that integrates Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. Please help my students be successful 5th graders, so they are ready for Middle School!
