My Students
My students come to my class expecting hard and challenging lessons. I have had great success with many students leaving my class with a strong background in chemistry and physics. My classes consist of lecture, working on problems and lab experiences in a wide variety of areas.
Many of the students enter the engineering and medical areas of study in college and do very well.
My classes consist of high school chemistry and physics students who want to push themselves into very technical fields of study. Our school is a school that likes to pilot different ideas with our students and our staff. Roughly 80 to 90% of our students take chemistry and/or physics with about the same % taking anatomy. In general our school is very science minded when it comes to upper level classes. Many of the foresaid students enter careers that are very technical and challenging because of their high school experience. As in any school we have students with different levels of interest and serious intent. However our school seems to have a group of students with very high motivation and demeanor to not only reach their goals but to do it with pride and dignity for the community from which they come. Our students make us teachers proud to be their teachers.
My Project
I would like to expand their experiences to include research skills for both medical and non-medical fields of study. After doing research this summer and learning new skills I plan on bringing many of the techniques and skills I acquired to share with my students. The materials I am asking for will allow my students to run vertical electrophoresis gels for protein identification and skills to identify them. The skills learned here are used widely in biomedical research and in biofuel researches throughout the world. Running the technical equipment and working in a sterile environment will be great experiences they would get. The students will learn how to run the equipment, learn sterile procedures based on a protocol, keep lab notebooks that are professional worthy and work together cooperatively.
The donations will give us equipment to run experiments just as researchers in the biomedical and biofuel research institutes do.
I feel giving this kind of experience sets my students above others when it comes to the knowledge and employability before and after college in the fields of research. A few of my students have made visits to my research facility after I shared my last summer's experience. With this equipment and continued visits my students will just eat up this knowledge.
