My Students

Learning by doing is the best way to learn, but it requires materials beyond textbooks and workbooks. My students need materials for learning centers so they can literally put their hands on Planet Earth while they learn about Earth Science.

My students are a lively group of 4th graders who love to learn, as long as the lessons are engaging.

Over 60% of them belong to a minority group and over 80% of them live in poverty. Our rural setting does not have outside educational opportunities, such as IMAX or museums. My classroom is literally the only venue for hands-on learning that my students have, making it vital that I provide it for them. Research shows that education can break the cycle of poverty, but that does not mean putting students in a boring, worksheet-laden classroom. It means giving poor students exposure to new experiences and providing them with tools to own these experiences. As a teacher in a poor, rural area, this is my ultimate goal for my students.

My Project

The colorful books and posters, games, simple experiments, hands-on science kits, and interactive technology, along with teacher resource books, will enable me to set up Earth Science learning centers in my classroom. Small groups of students will rotate through the learning centers, engaging in different aspects of Earth Science at each center. They will show evidence of learning at each center by producing a poster, completed experiment, or multimedia file. When every student has worked at each center, students will share their experiences with each other by giving an oral presentation on a learning center of their choice.

It is the little "extras" that really pull students into a topic and help them learn and retain concepts.

Our school, like many others, is suffering with budget cuts and extra materials are out of the question. If you help provide them, my students this year and in the years to come will be enabled to learn more and own their learning, year after year. You will help break the cycle of poverty for my students. You will help me change their future for the better
