This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

New standards mean new challenges. My students need exposure to high level text in order to rise to meet the rigors of the new California Common Core Standards. I hope to foster a love of reading with fun and entertaining take home magazines.

I teach a class of 30 culturally diverse students in a lower socioeconomic neighborhood school here in California.

Most of the families in our area are struggling to keep a roof over their heads, leaving little time or money to provide extras like books, visits to libraries, museums, or travel. Having great reading material to take home will make a world of difference to my class!

My Project

The new Common Core Standards emphasize in-depth exposure to classic works of fiction, non-fiction and poetry, as well as the development of high level, critical thinking skills. At present, my classroom library consists of dog-eared popular fiction, some well-used non-fiction science and history books, and a class set of dictionaries. I am requesting 31 copies of TIME For Kids magazine and 30 copies of Storyworks magazine to take home in order to improve reading skills and develop a lifelong interest in reading. Providing my students with rich, exciting reading options will inspire them to reach beyond their limits and become successful readers. Most of my students have little or no access to books in their homes. Your donation will allow my class to access entertaining selections in "Storyworks" that will give them a jump start to achievement. Sending home a weekly "Time for Kids" will give them a high level non-fiction text to read at home from cover to cover. What a wonderfully rewarding gift it would be to know that you were responsible for opening up the world of reading to my deserving students.

The thrill of reading is something every child should experience.

My students would love to travel to unknown, colorful and exciting new places as I read aloud a variety of fantastic new books provided by YOU!
