Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are learning English and by hearing correct modeling and practicing the language in classroom, they can improve their speech and articulation. I want them to be able to share any idea with confidence and pride.
My students are mainly English language learners.
We are a Title 1 school in a neighborhood of low-income, hard-working families who are very supportive of our school and its goals. Some students are out-going and some are shy. With the use of a PA system in the classroom, all students will want to be heard!
My Project
A couple of years ago, I used a PA system (on loan) so my hard of hearing student can hear the other students and me. As a result, everyone benefited. I didn't have to raise my voice so all the children could hear me. The system increased speech clarity and phonemic awareness, so my reading and spelling instruction was more effective. The children were more attentive and comprehended better. All the students had equal access to the content. The students were so motivated to participate in class discussions because it meant being able to use the handheld microphone. A number of studies have shown that students perform better academically in classrooms with a PA system. Children in theses classrooms have shown better listening comprehension, reading comprehension, reading vocabulary, and even math scores.
This PA system has so many benefits.
The students love using microphones, so the incentive to participate is built in. Instruction is more effective and fun! Unfortunately, the system I had on loan a couple of years ago moved on with the hard of hearing student. I would like to have our very own system to use year after year for daily use in our classroom discussions. This system also can be used for the various classroom plays we put on for the families and other classes!
