We've Got So MULCH More To Do!

My students need 100 bags of mulch so that we may continue to landscape and maintain the gardens surrounding our school.

My Students

Three days a week, from 8:00 to 8:40am, I am lucky to work with 12 "gardeners", who have essentially landscaped the green areas surrounding our school over the past 3 years. This year we must continue our work to expand our garden area and to maintain the areas that we have already landscaped.

As anyone who gardens knows, gardening is an ongoing project.

Our gardening goal was to pull up all of the grass (which was NEVER adequately maintained) and weeds that were surrounding the school, and cover the entire area with mulch, so that we could plant perennial gardens all around the school. We were successful in doing that in about 3/4 of the area, so we have about 1/4 of the way to go. We also have to add some mulch to the areas that we have already landscaped, so that we can continue to naturally suppress weeds, and also maintain the look of our garden. We would like the areas around our school, which is located in Brooklyn, to be an oasis amid the urban landscape.

My Project

While my gardeners and I plant, cover, and plow, we also collect the trash that has accumulated in our garden. Since we have "revived" these areas we have noticed a decline in litter, which was one of our goals. We noticed that when a garden looks nicely maintained people seem less likely to litter. As a group we campaign against littering and on rainy days we make anti-littering posters which we hang up throughout the school building. I am asking for 100 bags of mulch so that we can finish the landscaping around our school.

With your support we will be able to fully realize our beautification project, giving us more space to plant perennials, as well as fruits, vegetables, and herbs.

I am taking basil home from the garden this weekend to make pesto, so that the kids can try pesto at school next week. The garden impacts the children's learning in countless ways. Please help us to keep our garden alive and blooming. Thank you for your support.
