My Students
I teach middle school band in a very culturally diverse and low socioeconomic community. My students come from so many walks of life, and they are brought together by the communal effort of learning to play an instrument and perform as a group. For many, Band is a safe haven and a place they know they will be successful. It is also a place where many thrive even when they struggle in other ways in the building.
My students love working on their music literacy skills and applying what they know on a daily basis through rehearsal in the classroom.
We give multiple performances throughout the school year for the community. My students are incredibly talented and hard working and work every day to be better musicians and people.
My Project
One of the focal points of my instrumental music curriculum is the development of individual and ensemble rhythm. Without a great sense of timing and rhythmic literacy, we cannot play well as a full band. The Simple Rhythmatician is a series developed especially for the purpose of getting students to internalize and understand rhythm in band.
All of the listed materials are resources my students will be able to use to refine their music literacy skills.
These materials will help provide us with the foundational skills for playing a wide range of music in band! When my students fully understand the music theory concepts that show up in printed music, our ensemble performance ability will be brought to a whole new level!
