Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am the proud teacher of a 5th grade inclusive classroom in a high poverty area. This means that our classroom includes both general education students as well as special needs students with varying exceptionalities. In our case, many of our general education students scored extremely low on our state assessment in 4th grade. Over 93% of our students receive free or reduced lunch. We are located in a district hard hit with budget cuts and in a school with limited resources.
I am trying to provide a structured, multi-sensory approach to my students' learning. My students could benefit from several graphic organizer pocket charts. Students will be able to physically manipulate words and characteristics and then place them appropriately on the chart during activities and lessons. This way, we can utilize these resources in a manner other than through pencil and paper.
With the pocket charts, students can engage visual, tactile, and auditory senses in both small and large group activities. Students are familiar with graphic organizers and acknowledge their value in the learning process. The pocket charts I am requesting will allow students to utilize graphic organizers in an active and engaging way for students across the curriculum. In Social Studies, students can compare candidates in the upcoming election with the Venn Diagram chart. They can create a word web around a writing topic they have brainstormed to help formulate ideas in writing. The possibilities, in any subject area, are endless.
The time tracker device will help my students to learn time management skills. More importantly, it will allow them the chance to both see and hear time cues (including a warning before the timer goes off) while doing a task.
Your help will allow my "at risk" students to take a more active approach at their learning. It will help them to develop skills they will carry with them for the rest of their lives. Just think, 10 years from now when you hire one of my students for a job, won't you be glad that he or she has such great time management and organizational skills?
