We've Got Environmentality! Part 1

My Students

Do you remember being in in school and feeling like you could change the world? Well, these kids can and will change the world for the better. It starts with small things that create huge changes.

We play video games, watch TV, surf the Internet and turn lights on.

We leave the water on when we brush our teeth -- and let a lot of water go down the drain. We need to be aware of the footprint we are leaving on the planet. We need to see how to reduce it. My students are bright and curious -- and they are willing to make small changes that will create a better, healthier world. Adolescents are passionate, caring and intelligent. They care deeply about the Earth -- which is why we are part of the Disney Planet Challenge. They want to teach their families how to shrink their footprints -- and leave the Earth a better place.

My Project

My students will be closely monitoring their electricity usage. This part of the project adds a digital layer. My students are digital natives who rely on the Internet & digital resources to learn. With iPods students will make podcasts encouraging other students to make changes to help heal the Earth. Podcasts will be written & performed by the students. The students will make video documentaries about the process. Public service announcements will encourage small changes that add up quickly. iPods will also allow them to do more than podcast. They can scan their electric meter to check energy consumption, use an ap to check the fuel efficiency of their car, or get rewarded (at local stores) for reducing their carbon footprint. While my students shrink their personal footprint, they will also influence their families to do the same. Though their podcasts and vodcasts other students around the country (and the world!) will begin to change their habits.

My students will change the world.

They will begin by seeing the invisible. They will encourage their families to also see the invisible. They will shrink their footprints. And they will expect the rest of the world to do the same. It's important to remember that we do not inherit the world from our parents, we borrow it from our children
