Our students come from may different backgrounds and socioeconomic situations. A number of students have plenty of literature in their homes and the library will become a place to find new topics of interest and new series to enjoy. A growing percentage of our local population is not as fortunate. Regardless of which background is home to our students, we are constantly seeking new ways to share a broad assortment of literature with them.
There is nothing more refreshing than the sight of a kindergarten student entering the school library for the first time.
Their eyes dart all over the space, taking in the thousands of books waiting to be read, the comfortable seating arrangements, the computers, robots, and other technologies. For many kindergarten students this will be their first time inside of a library of any kind. They are full of excitement and desire to explore this special space in our school.
My Project
Our school has partnered with an elementary school in Kenya through the African Library Project. The goal of this non-profit organization is to spread literacy in places in Africa where access to reading material is limited. We've held a very successful used book drive to collect the necessary 1,000 titles that will make up the school library that we are sending. Now, we need to raise the funds to ship our library across the ocean!
The International Shipping Fee for a library of 1,000 books is $250.
We are hopeful that these funds can be raised through Donors Choose. In preparation for our used book drive our students studied Kenya, created Public Service Announcements using multiple forms of technology, and were essential in advertising and running the drive. They are invested in this project and we want to be sure that we help them to see it through to fruition. It is an essential piece of our Global Citizenship curriculum! Than you for your consideration.
