My Students

"Spread the Word-Save the Bird" How do the arts impact communities? It is the duty of each artist to create works to educate peers, families and community. In this project students seek to promote the maintenance of wintering wetlands and forests for migrating waterfowl through their art. My students need water color pencils, inks, pastels, erasers, blenders, papers, mattes and frames to create works based on their research for a wild life nature festival.

My students are from a small rural Title I public school and live in low economic, isolated rural villages.

They have grown up more concerned with surviving than preserving wild life. This group of National Art Honors Society students takes on a new community art service project each year. Last year, they created rural murals and before that they advocated recycling in a major art-science project. This year, our art budget has been cut entirely to acquire resources for a much needed reading specialist. These students participated in art sales and raffles to pay a ferry to transport us to a barrier island to see the migrating waterfowl so they could participate in the federal duck stamp contest. As a result of this trip, they decided there is a need to change their culture's fear and disinterest of wild life. And so was born the "Spread the Word-Save the Bird" young artists' campaign for this year.

My Project

We are invited to participate in the communities' 1st Nature Festival because we are located between the National forest and the Wildlife Refuge barrier island where migrating waterfowl winter. Unfortunately we do not have the appropriate art materials to illustrate landscapes and animals. Your donation will give these students the opportunity to create works for this festival. Students will learn techniques and processes associated with materials used by professional wild life artists. They will learn how to move from ideation to a fully themed art exhibit. They will engage in conversations about the art making process using the language of art and explain their subject, "conservation" using the language of environmental science. Creating these works will not only impact my students, but their families and our local extended community and future generations by advocating both the arts and environmental preservation. Students will be acknowledged by the mayor and local news media.

Your donations will give these young artists materials needed to create quality artworks to exhibit to the public in a nature festival that promotes environmental awareness.

By educating the unknown in nature, their art will help people recognize migrating waterfowl and other wild life in our environment. As such your donations will help develop young artists who advocate nature, land preservation and animal care. This one event has the power to change the culture of our community for the good.
