This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

How many of you reach for a water bottle when you're thirsty? You do, right? This is what we want our students to learn to do, drink water instead of juice or soda or other sugar-loaded drinks. We want them to learn how to be healthy.

Our students attend a small, urban, well-loved public elementary school that has been in this community for many, many years.

More than 95% of our students qualify for free and reduced lunch prices. More than 82% are English Language Learners. Students come from other parts of the city to attend this Spanish bilingual school that has a vision of graduating students who are resilient and culturally aware lifelong learners. They are curious and aware of their world. We try to provide them with as much stimulation and hands-on experiences as we can. The latest budget cuts have left us with a skeletal crew of teachers and money for only the most basic supplies.

My Project

We will use these water bottles everyday to stay hydrated! They will have a convenient, easily accessible location, right on top of the students' desks. Class time will be filled with all kinds of useful, instructional minutes because students won't be getting up every other minute to drink water. Students will learn how to maintain a healthy lifestyle by drinking water instead of sugary drinks. They can then pass this knowledge on to their families.

These water bottles will have many positive impacts.

Their desktop location will decrease the distracting trips to the water fountain during class. Their convenient size and portability will ensure that students stay hydrated and in tip-top shape for learning when we are out on field trips and excursions. Most importantly, these bottles will encourage a lifelong habit of staying hydrated with good, old-fashioned water, as opposed to sugar-laden beverages.
