My Students
My students need to know that they can make decisions as writers. Part of being a writer is participating in a literate community. A book club allows students to share reading material so that they can discuss the choices the author made and learn to make those choices in their writing.
My middle school students are in a low socio-economic area where schooling and education are not always valued at home.
They do not think of themselves as decision makers - which often manifests in poor life choices. If they can see themselves as being in charge of a part of their life and see how others make choices, maybe they can apply that to themselves.
My Project
These books will allow students to become part of a literate culture. They will discuss a shared book and analyze the struggles the author went through to create that story. From there, they can see the choices that one must make and how they can apply that to their writing and their lives. My students need to be empowered to make better choices and they benefit from an academic strengthening as well.
This project is important because my students need a background of literacy and a value on education.
They also need to understand how to make tough choices and decide between two ideas. They are impulsive at this age and need to see how adults and writers weigh their options.
