My Students
My kindergarteners love touching stuff. It doesn't matter if it's their stuff or mine. They just love touching stuff. I find they are much more engaged in learning if they are practicing their letter sounds with letter tiles rather than printed letters on paper.
Our school is located just outside of an army base in a low income area of Virginia.
We have many children who move in and out of our district's schools frequently. I have a class full of the most incredible five and six-year-olds ever. They inspire me and make me laugh every day. The vast majority of my students receive free or reduced priced lunch and live in single parent households.
Out of my nineteen students, nine are reading below grade level. Some of them are still struggling with letter sounds. I have been creating file folder type games for them to use in their reading centers and small reading groups. I am looking for more manipulative type games that they can use independently and with me in groups.
My Project
My students need Hot Dot Phonics Flash Cards, a beginning sounds phonics game, phonic word building sets, phonics dominies, and other activities. The requested games and activities will help me focus my instruction on the students' direct needs. The bright colors of the realistic photos included in the games and activities will grab their attention and keep them engaged. I have been creating file folder type games and activities for them to use. As any teacher will tell you, these are time consuming to create. Then they often don't hold up because children use them daily. I would much rather spend my time investigating new teaching techniques and creating lesson plans than making new games.
This project is so important to me because I desperately want to make my time more productive with my students.
I also want to see them more engaged with their literacy centers around the room while I am working with small reading groups. The activities and games I chose for this project are ones that I will be able to use first in my small groups then to let the children play them independently after they have the hang of the procedures.
