We're Wild About Our Outdoor Classroom! Part 3

My students need a variety of nature books for their outdoor classroom learning library.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Ingram's classroom raised $498

My Students

Our elementary school has an exciting project in the works- the creation of an outdoor classroom! Upon the completion of the open-air structure, all students will have access to this unique learning space on the scenic grounds of the school.

Our Elementary school is a very small, rural Pennsylvania school with approximately 140 students.

Many of our students come from low-socioeconomic families, and fifty percent of the students are eligible for free or reduced-price meals. The unique thing about our school is that it is located in the heart of the Pennsylvania Wilds. The school is surrounded by the beautiful Appalachian Mountains, and it is not unusual for our students to be learning in their classrooms while deer, turkey, or the wild elk population graze on the school grounds! Our community takes pride in the area we live in, and tourism plays a huge role in our economy. It is our goal at our school to expose our students to this local culture, and to celebrate the unique land in which we reside.

My Project

Recently our school PTO (Parent Teacher Organization) received a significant donation and decided to spend the funds on a permanent fixture for our school. Immediately we were drawn to a way that we could incorporate Mother Nature into the learning of our students to better "Teach for the Planet," and so the idea of the outdoor classroom was born. Currently our classroom is a basic, open-air structure with a closed roof. Through the support of our community and the school PTO we have been constructing and furnishing the outdoor space, but the additional funds available for educational supplies are limited. To foster an environment of outdoor education, our students need books for a small outdoor library in order to immerse them in learning about their new classroom "habitat" and the world around them. We instruct a population of very enthusiastic learners and we are anxious to introduce these new books into their classroom routine because we know they will share our excitement!

With these resources, the possibilities for the classroom are endless!

The kids of our school will be able to immerse themselves in reading about their environment, deepening the value of the learning taking place in the outdoor classroom. We are very lucky to have such an amazing project taking place at our school, and as teachers we want to do all we can to provide our students with the best learning environment possible.
