This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

In 25 years as a teacher, I've yet to meet a child who can resist a tub of water, a bucket of sand, or a tray of play dough. Whether they poke with a finger or plunge in with both hands, young learners love the touchy feely stuff! They also enjoy colorful, interesting rugs for group activities.

I have 2 classes of 18 4-year-olds motivated to learn about everything!

They are enrolled in the School Readiness Language Development Program (SRLDP). Primarily English language learners who qualify for free lunch, the goal of this program, unique to LAUSD, is language development. Students receive instruction in their primary language, Spanish, as well as English language development. Pre-Kindergarten has become pretty serious business, but my students are still just 4 years old and silly fun must be included every day! These materials provide opportunities for children to work cooperatively, side-by-side, or individually. As we begin a new school year, it is especially important for children to have options as they adjust to what is typically their first school experience.

My Project

A Water & Sand Table with lids provides a wealth of opportunities for learning. Thoughtfully prepared, a water/sand center can foster cognitive development, teach mathematics and science concepts, enhance physical skills, promote social learning and cooperative effort, and enrich language experiences. When filled with shaving cream, crushed ice, packing peanuts, soap bubbles, dried beans, or any number of things, it becomes an amazing tool for oral language development, especially vocabulary. Play dough is another simple material that offers numerous ways for my students to learn while having fun. They gain an understanding about textures and the different forms they can create. They also experience how things can be reshaped and become something else, which can help them learn about flexibility and the power of their imagination. The eye-catching alphabet rug runner and carpet squares will designate group areas while providing opportunities to practice letters and sounds.

Water, sand, and clay are basic materials full of possibilities.

As my young students splash, dig, and mold, they are developing cognitive, physical, and social skills that will enhance all areas of the curriculum. A new rug and a set of alphabet squares will welcome first-time students and their parents into a bright, happy classroom. These materials will help get our new school year off to an exciting, hands-on start!
