Our school serves pre-kindergarten to fifth grade. In first grade we have approximately 70 students. We are a leadership model school where students participate in the Leader in Me program to learn 21st century leadership and life skills creating a culture of student empowerment. Each grade level gives back to the community through a service learning project. Our school is a community based school, meaning citizens in the community have access to our outdoor area for recreational use during non-school hours. This grant would benefit all of the students at our school as well as kids in our community.
My Project
Our first grade students are doing a STEAM project-based learning unit. Students will be tasked with designing a shade structure using knowledge about the effects of sunlight, Sun Sail Shades and hardware kits. As part of our standards, students conducted structured investigations to answer questions about the effect of sunlight on Earth’s surface. STEAM provides students with real-world application of problem solving.
Winning this grant would have a lasting effect on the lives of our first grade students and school.
They would be afforded the opportunity to bring the project to real-life and solve a problem that would benefit not only the first graders, but all students at our school and families in the community. The outdoor area where the shade structure will be installed is next to our playground. The playground area does not currently have any structures that provide shade. All students will have access to the structure during recess time. The shade will provide protection against the sun’s harmful UV rays, giving students a place to rest and relax. Recess time for our first graders is at the hottest part of the day. We are in dire need of a cooler space for students who are overheated or need a break from the hot sun.
