FULLY FUNDED! Ms. B.'s classroom raised $759
This project is fully funded
In my college preparatory school in the Bronx, my students LOVE to read. Whenever they have a free moment, they read. I have caught them reading on the bus, in the cafeteria, in the schoolyard, and even in the hallway as they change classes. As their English teacher, these sights thrill me. There is just one problem - we don't have many books. I have purchased some books on my own, but before I can even finish restocking the shelves, my students ask again "Do you have any new books?" We do not have a school library, so my classroom library is, for many of my students, the only place they can get books.
In order to encourage and improve the reading habits of all my students, I want to start book clubs in my 8th grade English class. In book clubs, my students can appreciate reading as a communal experience. Small groups of 4-5 students will read and discuss a book. Book clubs provide several advantages over the class novel: they accommodate students' varied reading levels and interests, encourage self-directed learning, teach goal-setting, and create many opportunities for collaboration.
In order to implement book clubs in my class, I need a variety of high-interest books, (with at least 5 copies of each) for my students. I would like to purchase some young adult literature that my students can use to build their reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills.
My students have established great reading momentum and I do not want it to slow down. Please help me keep my students' noses in their books.
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
