Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

In order for kids to succeed, they must learn to read. I am a first grade reading and language arts teacher in a Texas school that serves a high-need community.

The moment a 6 or 7 year old child steps into my classroom, I can sense how eager they are to learn how to read. Some may be reluctant, but all kids want to be independent readers. However, the majority of my students face serious obstacles that threaten their progress. Many are economically disadvantaged and do not have access to age appropriate books at home. Just finding a quiet place to read or do homework is a struggle for these kids. Lacking the experiences of being read to or having proper encouragement at home, the classroom stands as the only place of hope for many of my students. I understand that there is a strong relationship between student poverty and low academic performance. However, with you help, we can break this cycle of failure.

Currently, my classroom library has a limited supply of books that are appropriate for emerging readers. Children are more likely to become independent readers within a learning environment that offers a wide selection of literature. I would love to be able to offer my students more books that appeal to their different interests and reading levels. I am requesting a collection of books that target specific skills that my students desperately need in order to become great readers (i.e. phonics, vocabulary, reading comprehension). I believe that my students will discover connections between these wonderful books and their own ideas, hopes, and experiences.

Learning to read is an important milestone that should be achievable for all students - regardless of their economic backgrounds. Your generous gift will empower us to break the pattern of low performance and influence each child to develop a love for reading.
