We're Ready to Grow Milkweed for Our Butterflies! Multi-Month Project!
Help me give my students access to a deep dive in science; with their own terrariums and later... food for our butterflies!
FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Brozsek's classroom raised $185

My Project
My class of 19 kiddos will go crazy when they find out what I have been planning! Get in on the fun! Over the next few weeks, we are going to learn about interdependence in science; understanding how aquariums and terrariums work; and the relationships between living things and non-living things to create a mini-ecosystem.
I knew this would be a great opportunity to make science hands-on.
I want each student to have their terrarium; one they build, water, and nurture over several weeks and months. As I was thinking of what would be great to plant I remembered we would be getting butterflies in a few months. Enter my epiphany: we need to plant milkweed!
What better way to help kids see all the relationships and diversity of an ecosystem; and then expand it into our next science unit; providing food for monarch butterflies! It would give both projects so much meaning; because it would be their accomplishments. They will do it! They will love it!
My short plan:
Lesson, kids will build terrariums, plant their milkweed, and place it at our window. I have potting soil and different pebbles they can use already stashed in my garage.
Students will have recording journals and will make observations. Could be an opportunity for digital journaling too! From here, I will surprise the kids that the plants in their terrariums are not only amazing feats; but will be the food for our class butterflies.
It will be magical! I will take so many photos!
Thank you for considering a donation. This will be a multi-month science unit my kids will enjoy daily!
