This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My kindergarten students have reached an important milestone! They can read! But they still need a lot of practice with basic sight words and phonetically spelled words to become fluent readers.

My kindergarten students are a diverse bunch of students who enjoy learning!

Some of them speak Spanish at home and are learning English. Some of them get free or reduced price lunch. About half of them began kindergarten without the benefit of attending preschool first. All of them need to learn to read fluently to do well in first grade and beyond! With a strong kindergarten foundation, students will be set on a path to success.

My Project

Perhaps the most important skill kindergarten students acquire during their year with me is the ability to read. But reading, like most other things, requires a lot of practice! I have requested big books that focus on color words and other sight words to build my students' reading skills. I will use these books to help my students practice basic words that they must learn to read "on sight" - words such as "the" and "you" that cannot be easily sounded out. I have also requested a Sight Word Sentence Builder Kit. When we build simple sentences with the new sight words that we are learning, students are given a frame of reference for that word and can more easily remember it when they are reading and writing. Also, students benefit from the extra practice that reading these quick, simple sentences provides.

It is crucial that I reach each and every one of my students.

If my students do not master the basic reading skills in kindergarten, they will struggle in subsequent grades and may never learn to enjoy reading. With your support, my students can get some fun and engaging resources to help them master the skills that are necessary for them to be strong readers. Thank you for your consideration!
