This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My middle school English Language Learners need independent reading books that will help them learn English AND engage them. Most times, picture books and I Can Read Books are all they have available for these students. This new selection of books is filled with graphic novels about teens(visual aids are important), familiar tales, and bilingual text; all of which will help them along their journey of learning to enjoy reading, writing and speaking in English.
Providing my English Learners multiple copies of these books will allow them the opportunity to read and learn together!
Since these students are all on their own levels of English learning, they'll be able to read these books independently or support one another by reading them together. They'll also be able to discuss the books, which fosters a deeper understanding of the language.
My goal is to be able to give them books that are for middle school students, yet are on levels they are able read. They spend hours and hours each day in classes being taught with curriculum that, most of the time, is far above their level of understanding because of language. Allowing them time during independent reading to read books on or just above their English level will build their love of learning, and your donation will make this possible.
