“Ready?” I ask. “Set,” they shout. “Show,” I tell them, and they flip their boards over, proud to have me check their work! Writing on a white board is liberating! My students are all ready and willing to tackle the newest math concept - until their dry-erase marker dries up! They need new markers.
My students are just hitting their teenage years, and need to feel they are integral members of the class.
Many of the families in our rural middle school do not have the money to buy school supplies. My students are adventurous outside of the classroom, but can be timid in math. They’re afraid to make mistakes, to be recognized as the one who doesn’t "get it.”
My Project
New dry-erase markers will inspire my students to test their skills without feeling threatened - to hold up their white boards for me to check, in just a few quick seconds - knowing they won't be called out if their understanding falls short. When using whiteboards in math, they feel safe and included, engaged and curious, proud and happy. With new markers, I can check their understanding in a few short seconds and review areas that aren't clear. Everyone has a white board in their desk, but we struggle to keep every child with a dry-erase marker. New markers every student in each math class to be challenged and engaged in a fun, safe manner.
My students are asked to process many new concepts in mathematics.
Trying out and practicing new concepts on with dry-erase markers on whiteboards will give them the confidence to go forward, sure in the knowledge that they understand and can achieve success.
