My Students
Sitting still during lunchtime is hugely overrated with my middle school students. After eating lunch, if they decide on the cafeteria option of the day, there is still time leftover in their 45 minute time slot. To absorb a bit of their boredom, we came up with a great plan to maximize time!
My students are having a great time in middle school.
Despite the environment outside of the building, plagued with violence and fear, there are great things happening inside of the building! Located in Southeast, Washington, DC, my students are always interested in opportunities for growth. They are especially interested in the "cooler" activities. Since we've finally established a lunch transition routine that works for everyone and student behavior has decreased, it's time for a few educational incentives in the cafeteria!
My Project
Lunchtime for students provides many collaborative opportunities. In addition to a break between instruction, students are able to converse with their classmates and trade a few lunch goods. This type of socialization is important because many of them do not have classes together. With 45 minutes to spare, after they eat their food, they are looking to do something next. To allow some flexibility, they thought of an idea to play a few board games. In my opinion, what better way to infuse education and practice sportsmanship! Monopoly will reinforce math concepts while developing entrepreneurial skills. Connect Four has always been a top favorite with students working in teams, and The Game of Life will present students with the awareness of responsibilities and finances associated with becoming adults, something that they desire more than anything. Many of male students love chess and checkers. With these resources, it will only be a matter of time before the tournaments begin!
The resources for this project are not only limited to the cafeteria.
Students will have access to these resources after school as well, keeping them away from the troubles of their outside environment. Sportsmanship strategies, educational games, and opportunities to develop ideas about future professions are sure to keep the flow of education happening, while providing lunchtime fun! We'd really appreciate your donation to our classroom!
