My Students

"If we try to think back to the dim and distant past... what is it that helps us reconstruct those times, and to picture the lives of those who lived in them? It is their art... It is thanks to the hand, the companion of the mind, that civilization has arisen." -- Maria Montessori, The Absorbent Mind

I believe that art is one of the many ways children express themselves, art is a way for children to communicate their feelings and through art children can use an open-mind in exploring and using their creativity.

Even though my students come from a rather rural farmland county in the heart of West Virginia, they've learned to embrace the rich artistic heritage in which they live!

Through art, my students interact with their world with their senses; growing and developing by creating enables them to think differently and take pride in what they've made!

It is here where my students excel, when we take away limitations and give each one room to breathe, room to explore, room to grow and ways to see their way matters and the way they express themselves in their art matters too!

My Project

Inspired by vibrantly painted papier-mâché and carved sculptures from Mexico, students will get creative with fashioning their one take on the fantastical creature, Alebrijes. It is here that this project bridges the connection of the arts and culture with a hands on, "Montessori" approach to creating truly one-of-kind, beautiful & visually dynamic "Altered Alebrijes".

Inspired by these vibrant sculptures, students will fashion their very own Alebrijes — each one different then the other, and with plenty of personal touches.

Students will start with an old toy that's no longer in use and will begin covering it over with plaster wrap and bright decorations, designs, patterns and color with acrylic paint. Their imagination and unique creativity will guide this project and allow them to turn say a Teddy Bear into a Yeti or a plastic dinosaur into a mythical dragon. Once the Alebrije is made, students will then become "story-tellers" when telling the "Legend of My Alebrije". We want integration happening, with our goal and purpose for this project resting solely on the students themselves being immersed and actively engaged throughout the entire process. For we know, that a Montessori Art project focuses on the process while allowing the child to truly experience art on their own terms.

Please help make this project a reality - with your donation we can bring this great project to life!
