My Students

Have you ever gotten a postcard from New York City? Did it make you want to come visit one day--or was the photo all you needed to give you a sense of what this city is like?

I am a second grade Special Education teacher in East Flatbush, Brooklyn.

My school is a Title I school and approximately 84% of our students receive free lunch. Throughout the school year, my second graders have been learning all about New York City. As a part of their social studies curriculum, they have learned about the history of our city. For example, they can tell you how housing and transportation changed over the last 100 years to meet the needs of our growing population. They also learned about the major bridges in New York City and how they helped population expand to the outer boroughs.

My Project

Even though we've learned all about our city, many of my students have never seen many of the places we have talked about. I would love to have the opportunity to take my 22 students on a field trip to The Top of the Rock Observation Deck in mid-May. From The Top of the Rock, my students will be able to see the Statue of Liberty, the Brooklyn Bridge, the Manhattan Bridge, and many of the other landmarks for which New York City is famous. I took my former class on this trip last year, and it was an unforgettable learning experience for my students. I would love to take my current group of students to the Top of the Rock this year. As a special education teacher, one of my main objectives is to make the curriculum accessible to all learners. What better way to learn about our city than seeing it from 70 stories above its streets?

We've got tons of pictures in our textbooks of New York City--and even a few postcards.

But I assure you, the view from The Top of the Rock will leave much more of an impression on us!
