Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am the high school librarian of a large urban 9-12 secondary school in California so of course one of my professional objectives is to encourage my students to read recreationally for pleasure.

I also want to help my students discover meaningful ways to spend their time during lunch.

However, like most teens, a vast majority of my students tend to be ambivalent about reading, this is especially the case since reading is usually seen as a solitary activity and my students are all about hanging out with friends and socializing. 25% of our students are new...new to the school, new to adolescence, new to academic rigor, new to making their own literary choices, new to being provided unstructured free time where they need to fill their own lunch half hour. I am especially interested in supporting these students as they embark on their new psycho-social and academic journeys, a new sense of responsibility and self-insight, a new opportunity to engage with friends in a more sophisticated and planned way.

My Project

I am always coming up with ideas for encouraging reading and helping students connect in valuable ways. My newest notion is to invite students to arrange their own book clubs...many public libraries have Book Club kits to check out to patrons who want to organize their own book clubs.

Each Book Club kit will include 8 copies of a book, a study guide of literary questions, Book Club process suggestions and games, and a writing journal for each student.

On the first day, students will decide on their book and receive a kit. Thereafter, each week, students will come to the library at lunch and discuss their book in the private room within the library. I will offer granola bars (for as you may know, imbibing treats helps with literary cognition!

In this way, I can offer a Book Club, but I don't have to orchestrate it...this give students a sense of autonomy & leadership opportunity and it allows me to stay available in the library for the majority of the students.
