My Students

We are writers. My tenth grade English classes are filled with students from a variety of backgrounds and experiences, each with stories to tell. We begin every class by opening our Writer's Notebooks and putting pen to page in an effort to capture moments. But writers need readers.

"Readers make writing deliciously worthwhile," states author and teacher Mem Fox.

When students have an authentic audience and purpose for their writing endeavors, they grow as thinkers and as writers. Technology can help my tenth grade writers connect with readers and writers beyond the walls of our classroom. My classes are filled with 15 and 16-year-olds with stories to tell. Our public high school, situated just outside a large urban setting, pulls students from a variety of backgrounds. And like many high schools across the United States, we are searching for meaningful ways to empower student learning in the era of Common Core.

My Project

The Swivl system would make it easier not only for me to record each class for students to later access online to support their learning, but the system would allow student to create their own videos of what they are learning. Students would more easily be able to connect and produce work for real audiences rather than simply turning in another paper that only the teacher reads. My goal is to not only make it easier to connect my students to experts outside our classroom, but also open up opportunities for my students to share their expertise. We write daily in our Writer's Notebooks, using these notebooks throughout the semester to mine for ideas and pieces that we might polish and submit out for publication. I would like for my students to use Swivl to create an online channel to share our writing prompts with an audience outside the classroom, connecting with other writers in asking our community to join us in our writing endeavors.

My students and I use online tools to draft, revise, and submit our writing for publication.

But we are using technology that is tied to one space in our classroom, making our video connections cumbersome and hard for all students in my class to participate. Adding the Swivl system to our classroom will ensure that all of my students have an opportunity to participate and connect more fully in our flipped English classroom.
