Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students range from 3-5 years old and they all have a hearing loss. We are a special education classroom for deaf and hard of hearing preschoolers and my students utilize hearing aids and implants. They all come form low-income, Hispanic or African-American families in Chicago.

Due to their hearing loss, all of my students have moderate to severe language delays and struggle to acquire language.

We have to work on everything from "What's your name?" to action words. We work really hard learning to talk and communicate!

This year I have several students with high social-emotional needs and resulting behavioral issues. My students are very sweet but are having trouble coping with their emotions and developing good social skills. We are working on expressing our emotions and needs in appropriate ways and learning to regulate our behaviors.

My Project

Due to the fact that we are a deaf and hard of hearing classroom, I do not have a lot of social-emotional resources. Most years I do not have any severe behavior issues and our biggest concern is language development. This year I have several students with extra needs and I need some social-emotional resources to address these needs and prepare them for Kindergarten.

I will be using these resources to teach my students to identify and express their emotions.

The learning kit includes many visuals that I can use with the flower feelings to help my students start identifying and matching their emotions. Once my students start identifying their emotions we can work on appropriate ways to express and handle them as well.

The books will be a good way of teaching my students to express their emotions appropriately. We can read the stories and talk about what the characters are doing. Then we can work on transferring these skills to real life situations.
