My Students
First graders have a love for learning that cannot be contained. They enter first grade feeling more grown-up and full of the accomplishment of conquering kindergarten. This excitement soon leads to frustration as they learn to handle the increased focus on academic activities. They need support as they navigate these new waters.
Because of working parents, many of my first graders are in the care of older siblings after school with few books at home.
It is difficult for these parents to provide the extras necessary to support learning. In these stressful environments it is critical that my students learn how to handle disappointment and frustrations.
They want to be the best and know that books are the key!
My Project
The books I have selected are necessary to implement my social emotional curriculum. Young children love stories. These books will teach children how to manage emotions and impulses. This is necessary when creating a nurturing classroom community. A positive and nurturing classroom community is the foundation for a successful school community.
Through these stories my students will see clear examples of how to manage their impulses and emotions.
They will learn how others have handled disappointment, anger, frustration and fear. It's important for them to know that these emotions are okay and everyone experiences them. With these books I can create a reflection library that my students can visit when they feel the need.
