My students need 24 copies of "Bullying in Schools", bullying posters, drawing mirrors, and a Nook tablet to discover various ways to stop bullying in our school.
Safe, accepting and caring, yes, that's what school should be for all our students. But for many students, school doesn't always feel that way. Acts of kindness, acceptance, and tolerance need to be an integral part of our school, taught to our students because words and actions do matter.
My students, almost 400, are an eager and creative group of students in grades 1-6.
We all know that many students have difficulty fitting in and being socially accepted. Putting a copy of Bullying in Schools in every classroom will help the teachers seek solutions. Bullying in any form cannot be tolerated and it needs to be discussed and solutions reinforced daily. Books, resources, and discussions also play a huge part in preventive measures. I teach the visual arts and would love the opportunity to incorporate the social justice that needs to exist in each and every day at school. Our students may say or do something without thinking and that can really hurt another child. They need to read, research, and discuss how to be kind, considerate, and caring to their classmates. Welcoming is huge too! Understanding each other's differences and looking for similarities can help students to see that we all want to feel many of the same things and want school to be a happy, safe place to be.
My Project
Students today want to grow and learn with all the 21st century skills that exist. Sitting in the back corner of my room, reading stories about Bullying on the Nook will create a great excitement in my classroom. They will also use apps on the Nook to learn how to draw portraiture, to understand that we are all different on the outside but the same on the inside. Mirrors will be placed around the room, so they can sit and view each other, and discuss the similarities and the differences. Many students who are being bullied often complain about the lack of acceptance, about the fact that they look and feel different. This activity will help the students to see that yes, they are different in skin tone, in facial features, in dress but inside they all are the same. In addition to this drawing lesson, they will share their likes and interests by creating a collage that will be displayed around the halls," Our Appearance May Be Different but We All Care About Each Other".
Using a variety of teaching strategies is so important when teaching our students the social skills they need.
Bringing up to date technology, the Nook, researching portraiture apps, reading stories from 'Bullying in Schools', discussing Bullying Posters, using art mirrors, and ending with a visual story is a great journey for my students, encompassing so many disciplines and connections. Help my students discover that "We're All the Same- So Let's Stop Bullying!"
