My Project

Help me give my students the equipment for physical activity and team sports. Having a variety of options will ensure all students have choices to play and get moving.

Having a ball storage cart, a jump rope storage hanger, as well as other ways to organize and store equipment will ensure the equipment stays organized and taken care of, thus teaching responsibility.

In our title one school 98% of the children coming are coming from low-income households.

In the village of Akiak there is no other safe place for youth to go to engage in sports, recreation, or positive engagement activities. The school is the place where all school and after school activities take place.

The culture in Akiak is predominately Yupik Eskimo. Subsistence is a way of life. Food is gathered seasonally. But, today the youth are eating differently. Sugared drinks and store bought processed food is leading to health issues and unhealthy behaviors.

Social media is a big part of daily life for many youth.

By providing an alternative to internet surfing and offering a variety of sports we will be able to reach more youth in the community.

The equipment purchased will be used for all elementary school and high school youth to share at the Akiak School. I love that the youth in Akiak know each other very well, many are related to each other. The community is very small (360) people. Families all know each other and the youth interact with each other in and outside of school.

Physical activity improves mental health and mood, exercise boosts a child's self-esteem. Having equipment to engage in physical activity can create a positive environment, while youth build strong relationships with the mind and body while developing crucial social skills needed to navigate school and life.
