Wellness in the Classroom: Comforts, Fidgets, and Journals
Help me give my students stuffed animals, fidget toys, a soothing salt lamp, cozy pillows for student-made chairs and the meditation corner chair, journals, and pens to write down their thoughts.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Every now and then, as a teacher, a conversation leads to an idea that becomes a mini-grant on DonorsChoose. A conversation last year, with students and colleagues, led to a mini-grant requesting stuffed animals, or "plushies" as they are now called. Strawberry, Blueberry, and Boysenberry were instant hits in the classroom. In every class there were students who would sit with their favorite "plushie" every day - it required me to create a schedule. These stuffed animals will become the emotional support animals or multiple teenagers.
The fidget toys have become a mental health necessity.
They are such an easy way to soothe anxious students; movement for students feeling confined in the classroom desk, overwhelmed by the realities at home and in school, etc. There are a myriad of post-pandemic realities that our students experience. Creating a soothing, engaging, beautiful, and supportive space is fundamental to learning.
Students will be able to journal - a powerful tool for so many reasons - and in times of quiet, make their space a bit cozier with pillows and a salt lamp. We would be so very grateful for your support with this grant which will support the educational and emotional learning/environment of our students.
