Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I am new to this position and will revamp the wellness center. My goal for this project is to create a welcoming environment for low-income and POC (Black, LatinX, Asian American, and Middle Eastern) students to have a safe space to learn self-soothing and self-regulation skills. Many of these students have experienced trauma, and these supplies will support them in addressing and processing their experiences.

The hope is for the wellness center to be a place that is safe, comforting, supportive, and calm.

I hope these items will give them security and safety in a classroom as they experience various emotions throughout the day. Hopefully, this space will teach the students about their feelings and decrease the stigma around getting help. My focus is on community healing and building social support.

Many students are always ready to explore and benefit from hands-on materials. In the calm, peaceful corner, the students will use the bean bag chair, fidget toys, and weighted stuffed animals to release frustration and anger. These items will support the students as they adjust back to baseline.

The wellness center will also support students in group and individual therapy where they use art supplies to express themselves. Most of the students in this school are Latinx, and many students only speak Spanish. Having materials in their language will support their development.

Understanding the basics of emotions and where they come from supports students in communicating how they are feeling and seeking support. There are Wellness Wednesdays where students spend their lunch in the center using a variety of items, and the wipes would help disinfect after each lunch.
