My Students

There's nothing like a good mystery. Even though reading is a struggle for my students, they love the Boxcar Children series. The Alden children travel places my students have never seen and use their wits to solve problems the adults can't handle! How appealing is that!

I am the librarian in a Chicago Public elementary school.

Our school is located in an economically distressed neighborhood, challenged by other disruptive forces. Our school budget is bare-boned, with no money allocated for novel sets. Most of our students are struggling readers. We are making major progress thanks to heroic all-school efforts by our dedicated faculty and support from our parents. This fall we begin a new phase. The entire school will experience units for reading, science, math, and social studies integrated around a common theme. Teachers are working together to design exciting plans. Our first theme is the environment. We will live with this topic all day in every classroom and celebrate our research and projects at the end of the quarter. Research shows this is a powerful way to motivate students and improve achievement in all areas.

My Project

Our fifth graders will be specifically studying pollution. The Bus Station Mystery will take us to a small town where a factory is secretly destroying the river. The economic issues around preventing pollution will be our social studies theme; clean water will be a science topic. This book fits our unit perfectly. The students will write various essays and work together in literature circles. Reading this book at the unit's beginning will engage our young researchers, capturing their concern for these issues before they move on to hard research. This book is a "page-turner;" students will want to find out what's happened to the river and how the town will survive. They will feel that pollution is a kids' issue, too, and will be inspired to look for similar problems and solutions in our community.

Novel studies are so successful.

Our students respond enthusiastically to real books, especially well-written ones like the Boxcar mysteries. If the fifth grade travels with the Alden children, their minds will be opened to the environmental challenges that face us all. Really, it's not a mystery at all - give the students something worth reading and they will read and grow.
