My Students
Team participation is such an important part of growing up. But what if you are a reader, not an athlete? The citywide Battle of the Books allows readers to be part of a team, to work together, and to represent their school just like the jocks. They showcase their reading ability and maturity.
I am the school librarian and I have been grooming Battle of the Books teams for several years.
Each year we do better and last year’s group is eager to go again. What makes this especially encouraging is that our school is located in a struggling community. Poverty and violence are part of everyday life; student achievement has suffered as a result. Committed staff, parents, and administration have been turning the situation around. Test scores are rising and it’s “cool” to like reading now. Thanks to dedicated volunteers, volleyball, basketball, and cheerleading are flourishing at our school. Students are so proud to represent our school and they build character as they practice together and work to improve themselves. We need to give our reading team the same opportunity! Drastic budget cuts mean we struggle to fund basics, like math books. There is no money for any library books, including the books we need to read for this year's Battle of the Books.
My Project
The citywide Battle of the Books gives my 4th – 6th grade “reading jocks” a chance to grow just like the sports participants. The team reads from a proscribed list. These are high quality, horizon-opening books. Team members drill themselves about the books and participate in a number of Battles online. Finalists meet live at the end of April.
All of our 4th-6th graders have the opportunity to read the Battle books. A core group of 20 readers will be selected to meet weekly to discuss these books and quiz each other. In the end, we will select an A-team to represent us in the citywide Battle of the Books. All team members receive awards at our school’s year-end recognition assembly. The whole experience provides great reinforcement for my avid readers. My students need two copies each of nineteen titles for this year's Battle of the Books. These high quality books will expand our horizons and let us compete in the BOB.
Your gift will allow our school to be represented at the Battle of the Books.
You will send the message that reading skills are as valuable as athletic ability. You will give readers a chance to read texts they would not otherwise experience, to open their minds to other places and possibilities, to stretch themselves and become stronger learners. Our team is hoping to return to the Battle this year. Thank you for helping us achieve that goal.
