My Students

My first graders are a group of creative, energetic, and out-of-the-box thinkers! They challenge me to teach in new and innovative ways so that they can learn based on their individual ways.

With some of my students having Autism and others needing social/emotional support, I've had to be creative in the way I give them access to learning.

Since over 90% of my first graders come from low socioeconomic backgrounds, many of them have not experienced, nor do they have access to, diverse materials that enhance their learning experiences when they are outside of school. It is at my school and in my classroom that I must provide my students with a rich experience that will help them develop a love for learning and feel successful as learners!

My Project

This project is designed to create a safe and supportive classroom for students who are returning to school after a year of distance learning. Having materials that are inviting, safe, and fun is imperative for them to be able to feel calm and welcomed so that they can learn.

With these materials, students will visually see a calm classroom and have materials to help ease anxiety and and any worries they have about coming back to full time in personal learning, after a year of distance learning.

The books that are selected will help start to create a sense of community for students who are in a new classroom with a new teacher and new classmates. The organizational materials, such as the folders, will help students become independent even upon the first day of school.

Having these materials that students feel comfortable with, enjoying using, and helps them feel welcome and calm is so important for this new school year.
