Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a new school librarian serving a linguistically diverse student body. 15% of our school is comprised of English Language Learner (ELL) students. ELL students must work twice as hard as their native English-speaking peers to learn English while keeping up with the subject area content required of high school students. Many of them do this while also experiencing culture shock and trauma.

Providing ELL students with high-interest books in their native language will help them feel a sense of belonging when they enter the school library.

The ELL classes visit the library more frequently than any other class of students. Their brains work overtime in class to keep up with both language and content acquisition. Independent reading should be a time for them to simply enjoy getting lost in a book, rather than having to sit and translate English novels into their native language.

My Project

My goal as a librarian is to help students fall in love with reading. For ELL students, reading in English requires work and effort that prevents them from experiencing the magic of escaping into a good story. Reading should not become a chore and ELL students need opportunities to take a break from translation.

This project will establish a bookshelf of high-interest YA novels in Spanish that will provide these students with the opportunity to truly escape into a good book.

It will also help them feel welcome and seen. New ELL students arrive regularly and one of the first stops on the school tour is the library. I would love nothing more than for them to be met with a shelf of books in their language.
