I teach biology and honors biology to 10th grade students in a high-need school in the inner city.

At every staff meeting, after I analyze the data to every assessment or enter grades at the end of the grading period, attendance is constantly the issue that causes concern. I have spent hours calling parents, sending form letters and attending parent/teacher conferences, but still getting all of my students in my classroom each day is one of my greatest challenges. What can I do to motivate students to come to school and to attend my class?

I think attendance is such a huge challenge, because it is something that is difficult for teachers to control. The first thing that I need to keep in check is my own mindset. As a teacher I do have the influence to get my students to attend my class everyday. With this list of supplies, I hope to do my best to make my classroom a place students want to be. There will be colorful posters on the walls, colored worksheets to complete or procedures to follow and games to play during lunch or homeroom. I want my room to be a classroom where my students are recognized for their big and small achievements as students and citizens. With the help of this donation, I will be able to recognize honor roll students, regular attenders, students of the month, improved studnets and students who are good citizens.

With these supplies I hope to motivate my students. I want them to know that I recognize their achievements and do whatever I can to keep them in the school and in my classroom. With your generous donation, all of this will be possible.
