Help me give my students a learning environment that supports executive functioning and encourages trying out new ideas with softer lighting and white boards for collaboration and experimentation.
In our rapidly changing world, some of the most important skills students can hone are their critical thinking and collaboration. Trying new things is intimidating for most of us, and my students are often reluctant to put themselves and their thinking out there for all to see -- especially in group work shared with the class. Nevertheless, the process of trial and refinement develop their critical thinking. Research tells us that using whiteboards suggests a lack of permanence to students that makes them more likely to engage in new learning. It's ok if they don't know the answer or the "right way" to show their thinking. Whiteboards give them a low stakes place to try out ideas and strategies. Large whiteboards hung throughout the classroom communicate an environment of experimentation. They will specifically help groups brainstorm and process together -- from my 9th graders using magnetic word strips to create and re-create sophisticated sentence variety to my AP Lang juniors creating concept connections and outlines with flexibility. Research also indicates that using whiteboards is particularly helpful for students who struggle with executive functioning because they can process information in a low-risk format and adjust their thinking as they go. In addition to the whiteboards, studies have also shown that reducing environmental factors that contribute to overstimulation, like harsh lighting, can help students focus and cognitive performance. The softer lighting will reduce the distraction of intense overhead lights.
