Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Our library is a treasured space, but as much as I try to warm it up and brighten it up, it still feels a bit uninviting. Austere concrete walls, large windows that bring intense heat from the sun, and open cubby spaces for storage (that are prone to dust collection), line the library floors and walls.
I know I can do better and make the library more like a home away from home with some extra touches to help our students feel secure, comfortable, and safe.
Curtains on the windows will serve as a barrier from the intense heat the sun produces and also help to preserve books that fade from facing the windows. Shorter curtains to cover the storage cubbies will work to neaten up the library by hiding stored items and keeping dust out of the cubbies. All curtains will also help maintain a more intimate, welcoming, and private space.
We currently use a decorated cardboard box to collect books, which falls apart several times per year, so the addition of book collection baskets will look nice and stand the test of time.
Lastly, additional signage greeting students in the library will look great and let students know they are welcome and belong in the library.
