This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach at a public school in Elmhurst, Queens that serves a low-income population of over 1,700 students. This year, we are following a blended learning style as we go back into school, meaning that we are going to be learning partially online and partially in person. Many of my students have been greatly affected by the pandemic, especially the newcomers who do not get to socialize and communicate with other students.

My newcomers are sweet, determined, enthusiastic learners who deserve to feel welcomed to the community and have resources to help them learn the language.

As a member of my school's equity team, I am requesting materials to provide a more equitable experience for the newcomers at my school.

My Project

Our school is home to many students from all different backgrounds. Every year my school gets a large amount of newcomers, students who are new to this country and barely speak any English. Many of these students come to this school without a backpack, or even a pencil and feel extremely ostracized and unwelcomed when they come to school unprepared and unable to communicate.

Every child deserves to feel welcomed in their school community and to be provided access to equitable education.

By providing students with book bags and bilingual dictionaries, students who could otherwise not afford basic supplies can look like other students and feel part of the community. Additionally, the bilingual dictionaries will help our newcomers better acquire the language and help them navigate through the rest of the school year.
