This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students face the challenge of coming to school everyday not knowing how to speak proper English and understanding the culture of the other children in their classroom. Many leave family behind in their native country and have a difficult time adjusting to changes.
My students are mainly of Hispanic and Asian decent.
They are attending a New York City public school. English is not their first language. They don't have many opportunities to do things because of their family's financial situations. Also some of the students family members are working long hours and can't be there as much as they would like to be available for their children.
My Project
We wanted to do a project "Welcome to New York" using the multicultural art kit and the American Heritage Dictionary so students can improve their English skills, assimilate into our culture and tell their families back home how wonderful it is to live in New York. They can share stories of all the different wonderful sites to visit.
My students will gain an invaluable learning experience, one that they could not otherwise have received.
They will be able to tell their families all that New York has to offer and show them how New York is truly a 'melting pot', with boundless opportunities. My students have very little resources available for them. This would be a nice experience to do this project with them.
