My Students
Imagine a classroom where students are engaged in creative, imaginative vocal music classes and are developing a deeper understanding of musical concepts such as meter, beat, rhythm, notation, styles of music, and instrument families. Quaver Music will help us be that classroom.
I am currently teaching K-5 music at a Title I school in eastern North Carolina.
This means that a large number of my over 420 students receive government assistance. My students are anxious and eager to learn. They enjoy all aspects of music from singing to playing to listening.
My students come from a wide variety of backgrounds. Living relatively close to the base, we have a number of military families at our school. Additionally, many of these students are English language learners from Burmese and Thai refugee camps. For many of my students, this is their first learning experience in America. I want to provide them with an exciting and unique experience.
My Project
Quaver's Marvelous World of Music is a DVD and computer-based program which is on the cutting edge of technology. Studies show children involved with music fare better in math, science, and language. Studies of music and the brain show that music helps students with pattern recognition, problem solving, discriminative listening, recursion, generative learning and abstract reasoning. This will be an excellent tool for reaching these objectives in my classroom.
Each episode provides listening examples of music and live performances for students to watch. It makes cross-curricular connections into other subject areas, which help to promote critical thinking skills. The technology of the online resources is absolutely amazing. It is very interactive and can be used as a group or individually.
With your help, students will demonstrate a love and enjoyment of music by the excitement they show as they enter the music class eagerly waiting to watch a Quaver episode or use the technology of the online classroom activities and games.
