My students need materials like new instruments (flex-a-tone, caxixi) and children's books, puppets, fabric, and posters that will support our music curriculum.
How many times have you said to your self, "I wish I could read music!". I can't tell you the number of times I have heard adults say this, and my goal as a music educator is to provide students not only with the ability to read music, but the ability to create beautiful sound.
My garden is filled with students who are thirsty for more knowledge about music.
My students are frequently stopping to chat about something they heard or to ask a question about something they saw. I am very proud to teach around 700 K-5 students. Out of these students just under 100 are active in my after school clubs; chorus and Orff.
Our school is only in its third year, but we have made huge steps in creating a community wealthy in the arts. We have an active and dedicated staff and PTO and many of our teachers are working towards authentically integrating the arts, including music, into their teaching. We are very lucky to be in a school where the arts are supported by our administration. They support all of the productions and arts programs that we present throughout the year, including a month long celebration of the arts in April.
My Project
Just like flowers, students will not grow without dedication and resources. To truly gain an understanding of musical concepts, students need to have a variety of experiences. Singing, playing instruments, moving to music, reading and notating are all activities that help students to grow as musicians. The materials that I am requesting will help students from K -5 experience music in these ways and will continue to benefit our school for years to come.
With the addition of children's books, primary students can experience ways to use their voice to produce sound while making connections to reading. Instruments can be used to help create a sound scape to tell a story or set a scene. Fabric can be used to create costumes so that actors can get into character.
All of these resources help to deepen and enrich a child's musical experience.
These materials will help take our musical garden from average to blue ribbon.
With support and resources, children truly can create masterpieces and that is the ultimate goal. Thank you for supporting the growth of my little musicians!
