My Project

Our school has just started and I am getting to know my new 7th and 8th grade students while they begin exploring science together.

One of our schoolwide goals this year is to make students feel good about themselves and being at school.

The Starburst candies will allow me to continue a tradition of giving some birthday treats and sciencey diffraction glasses to my students to celebrate them on their birthday, coupled with asking if they have plans and following up afterward. They always seem very pleased, and little connections like this make a difference in how they feel about being in my classroom and knowing that they are valued, as do the Kleenex tissues. I would like to put the sensory strips on every table and see if students use them to focus when distracted, stay engaged, and reduce their anxiety during tests.

Requested items such as the dinosaur talking stick will be used in various science activities. The jam and licorice laces will represent natural adhesive and tentacles when students construct models of coral polyps. The marine science books and activities will mainly be used by students with special needs in my marine science class each semester as alternate activities they would enjoy more than certain academic assignments I will present.

Wind-up walking toys will be used in a motion and data analysis lab. Batteries are needed for remote controls, UV flashlights, and other electronics. Lastly, I look forward to students using the durable and washable toddler socks as pen holders and erasers for individual whiteboards. This is going to be a great school year!
