My Students

I teach science at a suburban high school with an approx. student body of 1200. About 27% of our students qualify for reduced or free lunches. Our students were 100% remote from March of 2020 until March of 2021. Many then returned to finish semester 2 in various hybrid formats and some remained 100% remote.

My students are craving a return to normalcy, with social interactions, in person classes and hands on laboratories to the extent possible with the current Covid 19 pandemic.

All of my students will need safety precautions, flexibility, lots of positive feedback and an organized work space. Accelerated Biology students are classes typically of 24-27 10th graders that are looking for a challenge and an experience that preps them for upper level biological science classes. They are not immune to the "Sophomore Slump," and require encouragement and support. Advanced Placement Biology students are typically 11-12 grade students prepping for an intense exam in May. They need an organized curriculum & class space, as well as lot's of encouragement. Medical Interventions is both a science and a CTE credit class in Biological Sciences (PLTW) where 10-12 grade students apply biology concepts to current medical techniques.

My Project

The main goal of this project is to create an organized, welcoming, and engaging classroom space for students who will be back in the classroom after being remote and hybrid since March of 2020. A class aquarium, decorations and organizational tools will help me to accomplish this.

All of my students will have had a unique experience during this time and an organized and engaging classroom will allow these diverse students to come together to learn about the biological world in a safe and welcoming space.

I would like the classroom space to be visually calming and welcoming. I had to dismantle much of my wall decorations for deep cleaning of classrooms in March of 2020 and it now is somewhat stark. Students are also craving hands on laboratory experiences and I would like to be able to facilitate these within the ever changing pandemic landscape, safely. I will be teaching three different lab preps, and the ability to organize lab supplies for students and to transition easily between these classes is essential.

In my 26 years of teaching biology, I have gathered not only content and skill rich activities for students, but also fun activities that spark joy. A simple freshwater aquarium will be of high interest to students and will help to create an engaging classroom environment. In the past, aquariums and or class pets have been conversation starters and have helped students connect with one another and the class itself. Observing fish in an aquarium and or interacting with animals can also have a calming effect and relieve stress.

Thank you for considering this project. These items will benefit many students who, like all of us, are transitioning to "post pandemic" life.
