This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My students attend a Title I school and are from diverse ethnic/cultural backgrounds, namely Bangladeshi, Chinese, Hispanic, and French. 95% of them are Latino and African American. In my classroom, there are students with a range of disabilities, including intellectual disabilities, emotional disturbance, autism spectrum disorder, and specific learning disabilities.
Children with autism can frequently become overwhelmed or overstimulated by situations beyond their control.
This school year I was entrusted with the care of some active, curious 5 year olds. However, they are all on the spectrum and in need of constant de-stressing and decompression techniques to help them focus. It's important to have a toolbox, if you will, of calming strategies to help them calm down, refocus and get back on task.
Having these resources in the calm down corner will serve as a safe space for students to retreat when they feel overwhelmed and stressed, fostering a sense of security.
