My Students

Explore the world with me! Through nonfiction text with vivid photos, colorful illustrations, maps, diagrams, and more, students will be on their way to becoming confident readers while building general knowledge and increasing reading comprehension, vocabulary, and critical-thinking skills.

First graders are excited about learning new things all the time and want to explore the world around them in every way possible.

We are at a Title I school in South Georgia in a high poverty area. There are so many experiences that they don't get first hand, but I feel like this project would bring them a little bit closer!

My Project

Friday is usually test day, and I try to reward the students with some sort of engaging activity to incorporate Social Studies, Science, or Health. These weekly magazines will be engaging in a whole new way!! The students will get to learn fundamental skills while exploring issues for 1st graders in a colorful, kid-friendly way! These readers will also allow me to have access to online content that will enhance the things we read about each week. I feel like the students will be really excited about these, and will be able to take them with them and share the learning at home as well! Students will learn 21 different reading strategies and skills as well as all the state standards for Science for Grade 1.

With all the cuts to teaching and school funding, and the economy being so poor at this time, it's hard to find the money to do all the things I want in my classroom, and many of the parents can't afford to help out either.

I am hoping that through Donor's Choose I can give my students more and be able to share more with them, and also show them how we can all help each other - what a valuable lesson to learn!
