Weekly Readers to Share at School and Home

My students need 30 subscriptions to the pre-k Weekly Reader.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Thompson's classroom raised $154

This project is fully funded

Our preschool program has 30 bright stars with various abilities and many obstacles. Our school is located in a high risk area. Every penny counts therefore their parents can't spend money on Weekly Readers.

I work with several preschool stars that have bright minds but are unable to shine due to various difficulties such as language barriers, social economic, hearing, speech difficulties, and other special needs. Many of the parents are working hard trying to make ends meet and unable to spend extra money on simple things such as Weekly Readers. Many of the parents of the children in our preschool class are using their resources for after school babysitters, therapists as well as other day to day necessities. Last year, we received a sample Weekly Reader and the children enjoyed the pictures and short news clips. They enjoyed taking the Weekly Readers home and pointing and sharing the newsletters. I tried sending notes home asking the parents to send money for the Weekly Reader. I only received a few responses thus I was unable to order the weekly magazine for the class. The Weekly Magazine exposes the children to many things in the world that they are not exposed to such as animals, places, people and vocabulary. Studies have shown that middle class preschoolers learn 1000's of words more than children from working class, poor and non-English speaking families.

The Weekly Reader reinforces vocabulary and concepts that the children will learn throughout the year. The parents will have the opportunity to take a few minutes and review pictures, vocabulary and reread the Weekly Reader with the child at home thus reinforcing many preschool concepts.

This school year I would feel so grateful to send a copy of the Weekly Reader home with each child. Each child will be able to spend time looking at the pictures and reading it with their family. Your contribution will make such a difference in helping a family spend quality time with a child.
